Raising a dog doesn’t require a lot of equipment – most dogs are content with a few toys and treats, a food and water bowl, and a collar and leash. However, there are various types of dog collars that can be used in different situations, and using the appropriate type of collar is a good way to make the job of training your dog significantly easier. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the various types of collars you are likely to find, and the way in which they can be used to help with everything from behavior problems to fleas and ticks.

Dog collars are essentially bands of some material, usually nylon, metal, or leather, that are looped around a dog’s neck in order to allow the owner to attach leashes, tags, and the like. The standard collar can be used on walks, and will help identify your dog should he become lost. Many people choose a collar based on their dog’s personality or the color of their coat, so that the collar in many ways represents how they see the dog or accentuates how it looks.

Other types of collars can be used for a variety of specific purposes. There are collars for fleas and ticks that release a material that will kill them on contact, and is useful for dogs with long coats that like to play in areas with long grass, especially during tick season. Training collars are designed to keep dogs from pulling on their leash, and will tighten around the dog’s neck if they pull too hard. There are even dog collars that will deliver a slight electric shock if the dog barks too loudly, allowing owners to mitigate excessive barking. Some collars are equipped with sonic devices that will emit a high-pitched noise that irritates dogs if they become too close to an “invisible fence” or an area of a yard or house where they are not supposed to go.

Choosing the right type of dog collars for your specific needs is an excellent way to train your dog against everything from barking to pulling, and allows you to train your dog without having to scold it. This allows you to more easily create a positive relationship with your dog, and is a good solution for owners that want to train a dog’s behavior that has been abused or in fights with other dogs.
